Storage TCO: compare proposals on equal terms
Compare Huawei, Dell and NetApp offers for the same workload, usable capacity and support period. A cost matrix and growth calculation show how expansion affects the budget.

Compare the same operational outcome
A price per raw TB is not a complete decision basis. Each proposal must meet the same usable-capacity, application-load, recovery and support-period requirements. Similarly named efficiency measures in Huawei, Dell and NetApp proposals can have different accounting boundaries. Ask each supplier for definitions and sizing assumptions before populating the comparison sheet.
Cost matrix
| Cost group | Include in the comparison |
|---|---|
| Initial solution | Hardware, licences, required optics and supporting infrastructure. |
| Integration | Migration, engineering, testing, training and temporary resources. |
| Operation | Support at equivalent scope, renewals, energy, hosting and administration effort. |
| Change and exit | Expansion steps, added licences, eventual migration and decommissioning. |
A capacity growth calculation
Assume a 36-month horizon, 15 TiB initially and 20% growth at each complete annual step. Applying three annual increases gives 25.92 TiB. If 20% of the pool must remain free, that data alone requires a 32.4 TiB pool. Snapshot, migration and protection allocations are outside this simplified example and need their own sizing rules.
For backup, put an illustrative 30 daily points and 5% daily change rate on a separate line. Those values alone do not determine physical backup capacity: chain, retention and reduction rules also matter.
Reassess cost as growth changes
Have engineering approve the configuration, finance approve the cost horizon and procurement obtain equivalent commercial terms. Show which expansion step each option needs when growth accelerates or reduction weakens. Technical compliance and documented costs should drive the decision. Keep unpriced assumptions visible rather than silently counting them as zero.
