Storage and backup acceptance: readiness for application use

Plan tests around the application workload and recovery objectives. Compare IOPS, latency, RPO/RTO and recovered application operation with agreed acceptance criteria.

Build tests around application requirements

An acceptance programme evaluates whether storage meets the intended workload and recovery requirements. Agreeing the objective, environment, starting state and measurement method makes the results useful for operational decisions. Equipment handover, integration checks and application release can have separate acceptance stages.

Performance and recovery criteria

An application recovery example

In an illustrative scenario, the team restores a selected copy in an agreed separate environment. Timing starts when the service becomes unavailable; the recovery decision and the application owner’s successful check of the main operation are also recorded. The total includes detection, decision-making, data restoration and preparation involving other teams.

RPO defines the acceptable data-loss interval. Assess it by comparing the point in time of the recovered usable data with the start of the disruption. RTO is the target recovery time: measure from service unavailability until the agreed recovery criterion is met. Opening the application and checking its key operations demonstrate the practical recovery outcome. Compare measured results with the targets.

Test results that support operations

Keeping the configuration, software versions, dataset size, workload profile and results together supports repeat testing after expansion or upgrades. Dataset size is a test condition; performance is assessed through IOPS, throughput and latency. Tests affecting production use a programme, maintenance window and rollback plan approved by the environment owner.
