Identify marine engine spares by the actual engine serial

Connect the installed marine engine’s serial number to the catalogue position and complete part code. Record kit contents, quantity and required documents separately.

Separate vessel identity from engine identity

A vessel may have several main and auxiliary units from the same manufacturer. The vessel name helps route an enquiry but does not by itself establish part applicability. Wärtsilä asks for equipment type, model, serial number and any known part number when identifying spares. Follow that sequence: identify the actual engine, then the assembly, then the part. A manufacturer family name is not a complete order specification.

A serial-based RFQ form

Complete the fields using the installed engine nameplate and its applicable catalogue. If the part number needs clarification, attach the catalogue page and position for identification.

An example with two engines from one family

In an illustrative vessel, two auxiliary engines have similar model names but different serial numbers. A kit previously ordered for the first has not yet been confirmed for the second. Create separate engine records and obtain catalogue applicability for each. If the supplier confirms the same part, purchasing can be consolidated while allocation records remain separate. Where a new code supersedes an old one, request written evidence of that relationship.

Tie the documents to the actual item

The offer should state manufacturer, product condition, complete code, kit contents and required documents. If class or other approval is required for the application, agree the document and accepting party in advance. At receipt, match label, serial number or batch number, package completeness and intended engine. Plan repair and installation separately with the vessel’s authorised team.
