Specify a filter element, adsorbent or treatment reagent

Filter elements, adsorbents and reagents need different compatibility checks. Prepare housing, medium, flow and material documents for the product category being purchased.

Practical guide

Treatment materials are different product classes

“Filter material” may refer to a replaceable cartridge, an adsorbent or a process reagent. First state the installed system function and the role of the purchased product. Activated carbon is an example of an adsorption material; selecting it needs different information from sizing a filter cartridge. A reagent is procured against an approved process requirement. Documentation for one category does not automatically establish suitability for another.

Three different information packages

Complete the matrix with the process and operations teams. Use approved operating conditions; procurement should not invent the required treatment result.

RFQ matrix by category
ProductInitial information
Filter elementHousing and element codes, dimensions mm, end fittings, seals, medium, flow m³/h, temperature °C
AdsorbentApproved grade and form, intended application, installed system, mass kg, packaging, quality characteristics
Treatment reagentExact product, agreed specification, quantity and unit, batch document and SDS

Do not compare the micron figure alone

In an illustrative comparison, two element labels show the same µm figure but omit test method and rating conditions. This does not establish equal retention performance. Ask for the rating definition, test basis, flow conditions and allowable differential pressure. Pall product documentation also ties retention ratings and operating limits to the specific element. A similar rating cannot resolve incompatible end fittings or seals.

Document the technical review

An alternative offer should identify product code and composition differences, material compatibility and required documents. Operations approves housing and system compatibility; the process team approves the application. At receipt, match label, batch and quantity to the order. Dosing, mixing and operating recipes belong in approved site procedures, outside this procurement card. If treatment performance is a contractual requirement, agree how it will be measured separately.
