Defining the maintenance scope for PLC, HMI and SCADA

Define distinct deliverables for PLC logic, HMI screens and SCADA functions. Agree versions, backups, change permissions and verification responsibilities.

Identify each level and its owner

PLC logic, HMI screens and SCADA supervisory functions are different service areas. One fault may appear across several levels, while change authority and validation responsibility differ. Before service begins, agree an inventory of assets, versions, network interfaces and licences. Identify the process owner as well as the team responsible for the computing and communications infrastructure.

Service-deliverable matrix

Scope and verification
LevelDeliverable to agree
PLCProject copy, version, signal list and description of changed logic.
HMIScreen sources, alarm texts, operator roles and mode verification.
SCADAServer/client versions, tags, history and reporting boundaries.
Shared dependenciesCommunications, time synchronisation, accounts, backup location and recovery owner.

Illustrative change: adding a signal

A request for a new signal states its meaning and the function that will use it. Engineering confirms the I/O and interface, while the process owner approves the alarm condition. Retain the pre-change copy, agree the test environment and rollback criterion, then close the change with recorded results.

Avoid gaps in the support agreement

Specify remote access, permission to change software, the production window and the final approver separately. Include compatibility review and rollback in an update task. A backup file does not establish that the project is usable: check that it opens and that the tools required for recovery are available.

The service record should identify unchanged dependencies and outstanding maintenance issues as well as the intervention itself.
