Specify laboratory equipment around the test method
Select laboratory equipment around the method and sample. Four examples show how to clarify incomplete requests, package contents, functional checks and calibration.
Method and sample before brand
Laboratory procurement should not start with “chamber” or “measuring instrument” alone. State the method, sample characteristics and required result. Then identify the role of the equipment in preparation, drying, storage or measurement. The current method version and laboratory-approved criteria provide the basis for comparing offers. A promotional operating range alone does not demonstrate suitability for the actual task.
Four ways to improve a requirement
The laboratory method owner defines operating values and acceptance criteria. The supplier uses technical documentation to show how the proposed equipment meets them.
| Incomplete wording | Information to add |
|---|---|
| “Drying oven” | Method, sample load, required temperature conditions, air circulation and internal dimensions |
| “Large capacity” | Sample containers, loading arrangement, shelves and usable space |
| “Accurate measurement” | Measurand, range, method criterion and verification method |
| “Complete package” | Sensors, accessories, consumables, software and document list |
Do not select a chamber by maximum temperature alone
BINDER lists different series with natural and forced convection. In an illustrative comparison, two offers with the same temperature range may differ in sample loading and air circulation. Add the actual loading arrangement and method requirements to the comparison. Establish usable working space, shelf count and included accessories. Selecting a model by brand alone before obtaining these details leaves the technical purpose of the purchase unresolved.
Separate delivery, verification and calibration
State delivery-package acceptance, functional verification and any required calibration separately in the order. Agree the measurand, range and points, required measurement uncertainty, document and provider for calibration. Calibration relates indications to reference values with associated uncertainty, providing a basis for measurement results; adjustment and verification of conformity are separate operations. ISO/IEC 17025 concerns laboratory competence and operation; purchasing one instrument does not establish conformity of the entire laboratory. At handover, link serial number, accessories and documents to the asset record. The laboratory’s responsible team authorises use for the method.
